| April 9, Election Day, is right around the corner! If we are to see our dream of a new library for Shorewood become a reality, it’s time to knock on some doors and talk to our neighbors. We can only be as successful as our grassroots efforts, and the time is now. We’re asking you to commit to as little as one 3-4 hour shift on a Saturday morning or afternoon in March to knock on 30-40 doors in Shorewood to ask voters to support the library referendum. The committee will train you and supply you with everything you’ll need, including a partner for canvassing, unless you bring along a friend, which is highly encouraged! The volunteer training is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Troy Township community room, so mark your calendars. We’ll be working with John Chrastka of Everylibrary, the first and only national political action committee to help libraries win elections. We’ll have some food and fun! Visit the How can I help page to volunteer or requrest a yard sign. ************************************************************************************We're coming into the home stretch of the campaign! We need volunteers for canvassing potential voters. We also need people that are willing to put our yard signs in their yard. If you're willing to do either, let us know!Email Helen at helenvalantinas@att.net and let us know how you can help!************************************************************************************The Board of Trustees of the Shorewood-Troy Library had been aware for a while that the current building is not meeting the needs of our patrons. Parking was inadequate, there wasn’t enough space for books, and the staff was frustrated by the lack of space for programming.
In 2011, the Library Board hired Dr. Frederick Schlipf, a well-known Illinois library building consultant and professor at the University of Illinois. Dr. Schlipf talked the staff, the board, and community members to determine library needs. Some of his findings: · The Shorewood-Troy Library has inadequate collection space (by Illinois State Library standards). · The Library doesn’t have enough meeting room space or storage space. · We have too few parking spaces. · There’s no room to expand on the current site (the current building would need walls and floors reinforced, all new electrical, all new HVAC systems, etc.),and there still wouldn’t be enough space in the refurbished building or for parking.
It was determined that the current building is inadequate, and to better serve our patrons, a new library facility should be built. Dr. Schlipf created a “building program”. The program defines the amount of space needed in each area. The program was completed in Spring of 2012. With the program in hand, the Board hired the architectural firm of Nagle Hartray, after a competitive process. The architects from Nagle Hartray have designed a concept building. You can see sketches of it on the site. A referendum committee of citizens was formed in the Fall of 2012 to begin raising awareness of the referendum in April of 2013. At their board meeting on January 10th, the board will pass an ordinance okaying the levy question to go on the ballot of April 9, 2013. |
